5 ways to get emotionally adjusted to new home

We encountered many changes in 2018. I left a stable, corporate job to run my business full time, sold our condo, moved in with my in laws for a few months with our 2 children, and then finally bought and moved into our new home.

Needless to say, my Husband and I experienced a whirlwind of emotions during the course of just a few short months.

For me personally, leaving our condo was surprisingly the hardest thing I’ve done. We had lived there since getting married in 2013 and it held tremendous sentimental value to me as it was our first home together as husband and wife, our first successful fixer-upper, and where we had both of our sweet boys.

Fast forward to today, we’ve been in our new home for about 9-months and cannot be happier with our decision! At first though, living here seemed foreign to us both.

Besides the house itself, we needed to get used to things like the neighborhood, our new commutes, our neighbors, and even our new parking arrangements.

If you’ve recently moved or are getting ready to move and feeling a sense of sadness, regret, even fear? Ive shared a few tips based on my experience which can help you get emotionally adjusted during this transition.

Here are 5 tips on how to get adjusted to your new home:

Get to know your neighbors. Meeting your neighbors personally can make you feel more “at home”. It’s also a great opportunity to form friendships and gets tips and advice on living in your new area. We went to each of our surrounding neighbors and introduced ourselves. This helped to create a sense of trust and comradery between us. Not to mention, it gave us a sense of security and belonging as we were welcomed with open arms (and cookies).

Explore your new neighborhood. Take some time to stroll along your new neighborhood. As new residents, you will likely become automatically subscribed to your towns newsletter which often features a calendar of things to do. We found nearby shops, libraries, gym facilities, even events that we could take the kids to regularly. In time, we really learned to love and appreciate our new neighborhood and accept that was our new reality.

Bring pieces from your old home with you. Seeing features or furniture pieces from your old home can bring you peace and familiarity while you get adjusted. Although sometimes you won’t be able to bring any furniture for example, you can maybe bring small things like side tables, picture frames, even room decor and incorporate it into your new setting. For us, the only big thing that came with us was our dining room table. It did make me happy to have such an important piece of furniture join us on our journey!

Decorate your home to your hearts content. Find joy in re-decorating your new home. Create projects with decorating goals, snap photos, and just have fun with it. We brought a whole new style to our new home and decorated it much differently than our previous condo. It was nice picking out a whole new furniture set and matching it with a new carpet and room decor. We made the process fun and loved all the different pieces we found.

Be patient with yourself. Moving is almost always hard. As humans, we are hard wired to develop bonds to people and things. A house is no different. Give yourself time to “grieve” your old home and lifestyle and allow yourself enough time to love where you are now. For us, it only took a couple of weeks to really settle in. The new found space was probably what sped up the process for us!

If you’re in the process of moving or already have and feeling remorse or sadness over it, be gentle with yourself. These feelings are perfectly normal and will pass with time.

Sometimes, the process of starting a move can be stressful as well. Things like getting approval for a home loan can prolong the process, compounding the stress effect. See how The Associates Home Loan of Florida can help you get started in making that move.

You alreay have enough to worry about; getting approval for a loan shouldn’t be one of them. The Associates Home Loan of Florida offer low sizes for mortgage loans for all different types of properties.
