When I started my self-growth journey back in 2016, I had no idea what “affirmations” were. What’s worse is that when I did learn what they were, I thought they were downright silly and moronic.
Saying cheesy words to yourself on a daily basis? what psycho does that? Little did I know, not only would I begin to use affirmations in my daily life, they would also CHANGE MY LIFE COMPLETELY.
So what is an affirmation?
Let’s start by defining the word. Webster dictionary defines the Affirmation as:
something affirmed : a positive assertion.
In other words, It’s a positive statement of opinion.
We are constantly feeding our subconscious mind without even realizing it. Whether it’s good or bad, we are forming opinions about ourselves and others usually based off of our own life experiences, perceptions, thought patterns, values, beliefs, etc.
When a negative thought pops into our mind, It’s usually formed by our skewed perception of truth. If we believe it enough however, it literally will become our reality.
The problem with negative thinking
Much like a self-fulfilling prophesy, our negative thinking can have a direct impact on our daily life and when believed, these thoughts can drag us down and destroy our personal lives, careers, and relationships.
A good and happy thought will have the opposite impact if we deliberately choose to think positively about a situation or ourselves. These thoughts can become even stronger when they are spoken out loud with strong emotion and belief that they are true. This is the process of “Affirming” or in other words, validating or confirming.
Saying affirmations
In the beginning, you may feel a bit crazy saying these things out loud to your self. But over time, and with relentless practice, they will slowly become second nature and much like a seed that you plant, will begin to grow and bear delicious fruit.
The key to practicing affirmations is to be open-minded to phrases that don’t necessarily resonate with you at this very moment.
If it helps, you can change the phrase to become something more believable and relatable to your present reality.
For example, a statement like “I am wealthy” may not make any sense if you feel like you’re broke. However, if you change the statement to “I am learning new ways to make money daily”, it might sound more believable to you. Especially if you are in fact learning new ways to make money daily.
20 incredible “I Am” Affirmations to change your life
Feel free to tweak these affirmations to what works best for you. What also helps is also recording them, and listening to them before you go to sleep. There’s something about hearing my own voice through headphones that did something for me. It was like listening to someone else but I knew it was me.
For best results, repeat each affirmation up to 5 times with strong conviction and belief to yourself. Truly believe what you are saying is either true or is coming to be true.
