With a wide variety of healthy oils on the market today, it can be hard to narrow down which ones are best. Conflicts in both research and opinion make selecting the right oils a downright daunting task.
Generally speaking, It’s important to select oils which are high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats since both types of healthy fats have been shown to lower cholesterol.
Throughout the years, I’ve used several healthy oils and have selected my top 4 favorites. Although all of the oils mentioned below are great for you, my personal favorite happens to be coconut oil. I have cooked with it and used it on my skin for many years.
More recently, I have also used it to brush my teeth with and have even used it for oil pulling, a swishing method that removes bacteria from the mouth and reduce plaque and gingivitis. With Its wide versatility, It’s no wonder that this miraculous oil has been loved and used for centuries!
The truth about coconut oil
Coconut oil has received much scrutiny throughout the years for It’s high levels of saturated fat. It’s important to note that the saturated fat contained in coconut oil are in the form of MCT’s (Medium chain Triglyercies). These affect the body differently than long and short chain fats.
Research shows that the MCTs contained in coconut oil can help to increase metabolism leading to weight loss. This can reduce the risk of heart disease–one of the leading causes of death in both men and women in the United States.
MCTs in coconut oil can also help prevent arteriosclerosis, a thickening of the arteries which is believed to lead to a heart attack and stroke.

This oil packs a fruity flavor, and is rich in heart healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that helps lower bad cholesterol.
