I truly believe the energy you put out is the energy you receive. However, when negative energy has surrounded you, how can you break through? It is like the perfume section as you pass through Bloomingdales, only there is no escape and all you smell are strong scents. It overcomes you. Eventually, you get use to the thick perfumes and are no longer able to differentiate it from the smell of fresh air.
Soon enough, it becomes a regret to have let all those years pass with constant grief, anxiety, low self-esteem, whatever the negative energy that is consuming you. How do you break free? This is how I did it: I broke free when I chose to truly love myself and understood my worth and removed those that were costing me.
I began to be a little more selfish and looked out for myself. It sounds a bit immoral to be selfish, but in order to truly care for the people around you, you have to stand on your own two feet – and this requires some selfishness.
Of course, there is a limit to being selfish!! Take some time to go to the gym, do your hair in the morning, get a facial, or just binge watch some Netflix with a binge ice-cream session (this last one should not be done too often, doctor-in-the-making’s orders (; ). Take some time off of work, studies, social media each day for a couple hours or take a day of the week off to just focus on yourself.
Compliment yourself and look at the good things about you without looking for someone else’s reassurance. When you learn to love yourself and love being in your own skin, it becomes a game-changer. You build confidence and you begin to smile wider. You will notice yourself sitting straight, shoulders back and will begin to feel a sense of peace. It is such a wonderful feeling!
Eliminate negative people
This is a huge one! I realized there is only one person I have control over and that is myself. I cannot control anyone else. Therefore, the people that are surrounding me, if they bring nothing but constant negativity I should let them know.
It is their own will to do what they want. I know what I want and that is a positive lifestyle, and if it’s being contracted with tumors of negativity, then I also know that there needs to be resections. Otherwise, that tumor will metastasize and cause further damage, even reaching a lethal point. It is hard to do this, because these people could be family and loved ones.
However, for the sake of preventing a cycle of misery within generations, it is important to remove yourself from the cycle and build an empire of your own. Filling your empire with love, passion, kindness, and joy. Sometimes you cannot entirely resect these tumors (the negative people), but you can make them smaller and keep them at bay, preventing a mass effect.
I choose to remove the negative people that were feeding me with fear and bringing the world to be a miserable place. I choose, instead, to be with people that bring me joy, and encourage me to be just myself as I do the very same for them.
Find a purpose in life
I always thought I knew what I wanted to be and had big goals that I wanted to achieve, however, I never really thought about my purpose in this life. I cannot say I have fully found my true purpose, I am 25 years-old and still need some time.
I am still learning and growing. I do know that I love medicine and I am very passionate about this field (which is why I started my YouTube channel aiming to help other medical students like me). I also know my CURRENT purpose in life, which is to not merely finish medical school, but truly learn as I go through each rotation.
I want to build to be the best version of myself. While doing so, somehow, in some way help at least one person each day. Even as simple as putting a smile on their face.
Alter your perspective
Number four – Perception. This is key. We all have our own perception in life and it is fascinating to see different perceptions than our own. I love to learn from how others perceive this world. There isn’t a right and a wrong for them most part. However, our day to day actions are affected by our very perception. If it holds a negative take, then whatever we do is affected negatively.
For example, if I perceive the world to be a harsh place filled with endless problems, then I am going to either live in fear, hate or just take my day as in the life of a patient with Hashimoto disease– slow, depressed, fatigued. At least they can take medication to help them, but what can you take?
If I perceive the world to be a gift by God or a world filled with opportunities and beautiful people, then I am going to enjoy each day more, love more. When something happens that isn’t our original plan, we are able move around it rather than feel like “nothing ever works”. A positive perception never hurts no one –in fact it helps everyone!
