How I treat my acne scars naturally using the Derma Roller!

Having suffered with acne since the age of 11, I know the negative impact it can have on one’s social life and self esteem. As a teenager, I struggled to find skincare products that didn’t aggravate my skin and even some of the so-called “sensitive skin” product lines, didn’t seem to work. They either dried out my skin, lead to excessive oiliness, or contributed to further clog my pores.

My acne was cystic in nature and very painful as well. I’d spend hours in the bathroom picking at my skin and crying because it seemed like nothing worked to relieve it. Little did I know at the time the damage that I was inflicting on my skin by constantly touching my face and trying to remove the dirt and oil through popping.

My skin was bumpy, and nothing that I tried was working to get rid of the dirt and oil under my skin. When I was 20, I was advised to see a dermatologist in our area who specialized in the treatment of cystic acne. She prescribed a very powerful chemical-based gel that  as I later found out, was the topical version of accutane. Her goal was for the product to act similar to a “chemical peel” which would help shed several layers of skin revealing a clearer, smoother surface.

This product left my skin a lot worse than when I first began using it. Not only was my skin painfully red, and inflamed, it remained in this hideous condition months after stopping the treatments. This was a huge wake up call for me. I knew I was done with harsh skincare ingredients that never seemed to work, and always seemed to exasperate my skin issues.

When I reached my mid 20’s, I discovered a few different products that were free of parabens and harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde. By this time however, the damage from years of cystic acne had already taken a toll out on my skin. Not only did I have some major scarring, my skin was inflamed, red, and sensitive to the touch. In a desperate attempt to redeem my once baby-soft skin, I ended up at my my favorite store in the world, Whole Foods where I began experimenting with different more natural skincare products–I’ll likely do a separate post listing all my favorites at a later date.

Discovering the Derma Roller

My three go-to products today are my blacksoap facewash, a gentle moisturizer, and lastly, witch hazel. Since using these very simple products, my cystic acne resolved and my skin looked brighter and healthier. However, I STILL had the ugly acne ice-pick scars that just didn’t want to smooth out.

It wasn’t until I discovered this AMAZING product that I now call my “holy grail” when it comes to natural scar removal. I don’t normally boast about a product unless I absolutely love it and that’s definitely the case here.

The Derma Roller (also known as a skin roller or microneedle roller) is a revolutionary hand-held device which has the ability to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin to promote healthier skin cells in the body.

Using 200 extremely fine (medical-grade) needles, the dermaroller painlessly creates microchannels in the skin which then trigger the body’s natural healing process to create new tissue and replace any type of skin imperfections. Regularly renewing the skins cells helps to treat common problems such as wringkles, scarring, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, uneven skin, and even hair loss. I personally have been using it regularly to help smooth out my skin and get rid of acne scars.

Along with the derma roller, I am using the collagen cream that came with it called “Derma Cell” which I apply immediately after using the derma roller system. I found that this was a little harsh on my skin so I only use it once a week. The rest of the week I simply massage my face with a carrier oil after the needling. I find that my skin responds best to all natural products so I tend to “couple” them with the Derma Roller.

To use the derma roller, I simply roll it onto the problem areas of my skin in a sweeping motion 4 times in 4 different directions–creating a “T” and “X” motion. Click here to learn more how to use it the proper way.

I use the Derma Roller 3-4 days a week and clean it once a week by dipping it in rubbing alcohol for about 30 minutes as indicated in the instruction manual.

There are a few different sizes to choose from depending on what you’d like to treat. You can find more details information on how to choose your size on their website. I chose the 1.0mm because it was made specifically for people looking to treat acne scarring. It supposedly works to treat fine lines/wrinkles as well but I have not tried it for that purpose yet.

OK so I don’t mean to get all up close and personal with my skin but I needed to show you my progress after using the Derma Roller for only 6 weeks. This is the worst part of my face and as you can see, there has been significant improvement in both the size and depth of the these ice pick scars as well as a shrinkage in my pores.

These photos are absolutely NOT touched up in any way. The lighting is the same although my skin is a bit tanned in the second photo after coming back from vacation. I will continue to use the derma roller in order to see more dramatic improvements but I have been extremely happy with the results so far.

Very cool. I’ve always wondered about these. I don’t have much scarring, just a teeny bit. So I might hold off for now.

I have been battling with Acne ever since my teenage. I have tried out a bunch of creams and antibiotics, but nothing worked. Will surely give this a try

Thank you Genevia for stopping by. I honestly really love this thing. The only thing is you have to stay consistent with it and be patient to see results. I just ordered one for bigger needles to use on my stretch marks and my new found cellulite…wish me luck! LOL
