An open letter to my younger self – Advice and warning

Dear younger ME,

I know you’re busy and probably don’t feel like you have the time to read this, but there’s so much I want to say to you, warn you about it, and prepare you for. Just know that everything I’m going to share is for your own good and based on true life experience, so I ask that you hear me out.

Life is so much more than what you’ve been made to believe and I’d really hate to see you wasting your time on things that don’t really matter. I also want you to be ready for what’s to come, so that every thing you do now, is benefiting your future and preparing you for the road ahead.

Embrace Challenges

All the problems and challenges you’re facing at this moment, I ask that you please try your best not to let them break you. Instead, embrace them and cherish them, for you will someday look back and understand exactly why things happened the way they did. Just know that every single moment in your life will ultimately lead you to your life’s purpose and truly in the end, that is the most important thing you will ever find.

Do not be afraid of being afraid. You are probably going through a lot right now with, school, work, relationships, health, finances, and may feel anxious, worried, or scared. It’s ok to feel that way, normal actually. It only becomes a problem when you start to have irrational ideas and beliefs. You’re young, stop worrying about things that won’t matter in 10 years and instead, use your time wisely to invest in a future you’ll feel good about. Oh, and all of these “what if” thoughts swarming around in your head…observe them, but don’t give them your attention for they may become self-fulfilling prophecies. You’re running at speeds of a hundred miles an hour..please slow down.

Forgive others

Stop trying to impress people who don’t care about you by hiding your true self and your beliefs and most importantly, stop letting others dictate what you do in your life. The truth is, people will ALWAYS have an opinion about who you are and there is nothing you can do to stop that. Listen to your heart and always do the right thing, because those who matter will accept you regardless. Remember though, It IS possible to outgrow certain people and that’s ok, for not everyone who comes into your life is meant to stay there, so let them go.

Many people will put you down, mistreat you, and worse, underestimate you. I know this because I’ve been there and have felt the pain. It’s easy to get bitter and hold resentment in your heart like you’re doing now, I get it. However, I’m here to tell you this…all that pent up anger in your heart will only serve to destroy you and keep you away from your blessings. As hard as it may be to do, you need to learn to forgive those who hurt you. Not for them, but for yourself. Use the rocks that people throw at you to build a wonderful pathway to a beautiful destination.  So please set yourself free…

Humble yourself

I know your pride and arrogance makes you think you’re unstoppable but you’d better choose to humble yourself now, before life does it for you. Your superficial desires for the things of this world are temporary and will dissipate if you pay them no mind. Life has absolutely nothing to do with material objects and acquiring them won’t satisfy your soul. It may seem that way initially, but don’t be fooled. True happiness comes from serving others, trust me. Love is the single most important energy in this world, and you have a lot of it to give so don’t hold back.

Give to others until it hurts. You lose nothing by helping those who cannot help themselves.  You are doing the world a disservice by holding back all the wonderful gifts you’ve been blessed with. Share them with others and help people grow and do it genuinely without expecting anything in return. Based on what I know so far, you always receive what you put out in the world tenfold.

Appreciate your loved ones

Look, I understand that you’ve got so much to do, places to go, and people to see but please do not take anyone for granted. No one is promised tomorrow and that includes our loved ones. Spend more time with your family for they have been there for you when no one else was. The least you could do is use some time from your day to call them, take them out, and just be there with them.

Appreciate all the advice you get from your parents and close relatives for you never know when the time will come that you will no longer be able to talk to them. No matter how annoying or nagging you think they are, they’ll always have your best interest at heart and you will always remember their words as being the wisest. Your life may seem hectic at this moment but trust that it will only get busier, so take the time to spend with them now before It’s too late.

Work hard

All of your dreams mean nothing if you aren’t willing to work for them. Nothing worth having comes easy and I know that you’ve heard people say this again and again but you don’t truly understand. You see, If you did, you wouldn’t always be trying to find the easy way out. You need to put in hard work to enjoy the fruits of your labor so always opt for persistence over laziness.

Save your money, minimize your credit card use, and invest. Stop wasting your resources on things that do not matter. More importantly, stop buying things that you cannot afford and instead, put your hard earned money into an interest earning savings account. You’ll learn very soon that credit cards are like shackles that hold you in prison, so build your credit yes, but do so reasonably and within your means. Begin the process of becoming an entrepreneur now and stop worrying about the time it will take to get there. Success does not happen overnight and can take years to develop so start now and build an empire that will last for many years to come. The years will pass anyway and the time to start  is NOW.

My final thoughts

It’s OK if you don’t have it all figured out yet, really. I still don’t. But now that you know what I know, you have no excuses for staying where you are. Truly the best teacher in life is experience so take every situation negative or not, and use it to improve upon your life and the lives of others. For that is where you will find true happiness and contentment.

Love, your future self

Innana xoxo
